Dr Behnam Bastami a gender-diverse psychiatrist with lived experience of gender incongruence. Her extensive psychiatric career in Australia includes work with Eastern Health and completion of various clinical placements. Coupled with locuming out of Melbourne, this has provided her with a wealth of knowledge and experience to treat a range of psychiatric conditions, especially within diverse and inclusive contexts. She bring cultural awareness and a non-judgmental approach to her work, recognising human difference and its impact on psychosocial distress within the broader societal context. This enables her to provide affirming, person-cantered care.

Dr Bastami’s clinical approach is holistic and rooted in the biopsychosocial model, which means she consider each patient’s unique biological, psychological, social, and cultural background.
She places particular emphasis on how trauma shapes us as individuals and can create challenges later in life. She is dedicated to helping patients explore and process these experiences at their own pace, drawing on trauma-informed approaches to foster healing, resilience, and growth.

With over 14 years of experience in mental health in Australia, Dr Bastami has worked across diverse settings, multidisciplinary teams, and locations. Since completing medical school in 2006 and successfully passing the Australian Medical Council exams, she has pursued psychiatric training in Australia, achieving Fellowship of the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Psychiatrists in 2026.
